New UK High Commissioner Pete Vowles Arrives In Abuja

The United Kingdom’s High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in Abuja to begin his new diplomatic assignment.

Vowles takes over from Richard Montgomery, who previously served as the UK’s envoy to Nigeria.

His arrival was announced on Monday by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission.

Expressing his enthusiasm about the new posting, Vowles said his immediate priority would be to understand Nigeria by engaging with people and experiencing the country firsthand.

“I am hugely excited to be in Nigeria. My first priority is to listen and learn – to travel, meet people and immerse myself in this extraordinary country, its culture and its energy,” he said.

He described the relationship between Britain and Nigeria as a longstanding partnership largely sustained by ties between their citizens.

Vowles said he was eager to work with partners across Nigeria to deepen the existing relationship and explore areas for greater cooperation between the two countries.

The British diplomat was announced as the UK’s next High Commissioner to Nigeria on June 16, 2026. He brings extensive experience spanning diplomacy and international development to his new role.
