New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has declared he will remain strictly neutral ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina—confessing that his track record of backing losers has forced him to sit this one out.

Speaking at a City Hall press conference, the mayor fielded questions about which side he’d be supporting when the two footballing giants clash at the New York New Jersey Stadium in the tournament’s decisive match.
“I honestly can’t pick anyone,” Mamdani admitted with a wry smile. “Everyone I’ve supported has lost, so I feel like whoever I mention will end up losing. You know how it is.”
But the mayor quickly pivoted to a more surprising revelation—his initial disbelief over one of the tournament’s most viral backstories: the unlikely connection between Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Argentina’s legendary captain Lionel Messi.
“I consider myself pretty tech-savvy, someone who can usually spot the difference between AI-generated content and real images,” Mamdani explained. “But when I first saw that photo of Messi bathing baby Yamal, I was absolutely convinced it was deepfake.”
The photograph in question shows a young Messi participating in a charity calendar photoshoot years ago, where he was paired with infants—including a baby Lamine Yamal—in a bathtub setting for a UNICEF campaign.
The image resurfaced during the tournament, stunning fans worldwide who couldn’t believe the two would face each other on football’s biggest stage nearly two decades later.
“I don’t know if you’ve seen it,” Mamdani continued, “but there’s this real photo of Lionel Messi and a baby Lamine Yamal in a bathtub. And now, incredibly, these two are set to compete this Sunday right here in New York, over in New Jersey. It’s absolutely extraordinary.”
The mayor confessed he did his homework before accepting the image as genuine. “I had to verify it multiple times. It seemed too perfect, too cinematic—like something out of a sports documentary script. But it’s real, and it makes this final even more special.”
The 2026 World Cup, which kicked off on June 11 at Mexico City’s historic Azteca Stadium, has been a tournament of unexpected narratives. Now, with 102 of 104 matches complete, all eyes turn to the final showdown between South American champions Argentina and European titleholders Spain—a matchup originally scheduled for the Finalissima earlier this year, but now elevated to the sport’s ultimate stage.
Mamdani, whose city will host the final at the 82,500-capacity stadium in East Rutherford, promised the typical diplomatic approach from a man in his position.
“I’ll give the standard politician’s response,” he chuckled. “I’m eager for a great match. May the best team win—just don’t blame me if they don’t.”
The mayor’s “curse” confession has already sparked lighthearted debate among New Yorkers, with some social media users jokingly begging him to publicly endorse their rival team. Others have praised his honesty, noting that his neutrality might actually be the safest bet for both sides.
Sunday’s final promises not only a generational clash between Messi, widely considered football’s greatest-ever player, and Yamal, the 18-year-old prodigy who has taken the tournament by storm, but also a battle for supremacy between two continents. The two teams were destined to meet earlier this year in the Finalissima, but that fixture was postponed—making this World Cup final an even more tantalizing prospect.
For Mamdani, the experience of hosting the final in his city has been deeply personal despite his reluctance to pick a side. “To see these two stories converge here, in New York, is genuinely remarkable. Whether you’re Team Messi or Team Yamal, you’re witnessing something historic.”
The mayor concluded his remarks with a final plea to fans descending on the city. “Come enjoy the match, support your teams, and please—don’t ask me for predictions. I’ve learned my lesson.”
