The Nigeria Football Referees’ Association (NFRA) has issued a strong warning against attacks, harassment and intimidation of match officials as the Nigeria Premier Football League season approaches its final stages.
In response to a series of recent incidents involving assaults on referees at match venues, the association has activated a Security and Safety Monitoring Committee aimed at enhancing protection for officials across domestic competitions.
Acting President of the NFRA, Kelechi Mejuobi, said the decision was necessitated by growing concerns over the safety of referees, particularly during high-stakes fixtures.
“It has become necessary for us to work towards protecting our members at match venues,” Mejuobi said. “Recent events have made this unavoidable, especially as the league draws to a close and tensions continue to rise.”
According to him, the newly activated committee has developed procedures designed to complement existing efforts by the league organisers in ensuring a secure environment for match officials.
While emphasising the association’s commitment to referee welfare, Mejuobi also urged officials to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
“As we intensify efforts to guarantee your safety, referees must also be good ambassadors of the game by maintaining integrity and applying best officiating practices,” he added.
The NFRA further warned that it would not tolerate any conduct capable of bringing the game into disrepute, while calling on clubs to channel grievances through official mechanisms rather than resorting to violence.
“The association will not accept any attempt to attack referees. Clubs should use the appropriate channels to address concerns about officiating,” Mejuobi stressed.
Meanwhile, several top-rated referees, including FIFA-accredited officials, have been appointed to oversee upcoming fixtures as the league season reaches its climax.
