Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE) has mobilised students in Kaduna State to drive climate change mitigation in the country.
The founding director of WISE, Olanike Olugboji-Daramola, during a one-day awareness walk at the College of Environmental Studies, Kaduna Polytechnic, with the theme āGeneration Green: Taking the Lead in Tackling Land Degradation and Drought,ā urged the students and young women to engage in tree planting.
āPlanting trees can be a means of livelihood for homes; we cannot survive without trees. I am urging you all to have love for the environmentā.
However, Olugboji-Daramola urged the students to think differently about the environment, noting that global warming is a warning.
āItās been a burning issue on my mind in recent times as I continue to hear eco-anxiety. A lot of young people are becoming anxious about all the bad news, the chaos across the world, environmental challenges, global warming, and other related issues around the environment.
āWe decided to create awareness among young people about the need for them to take the lead, think outside the box, drive solutions, take actions, and develop initiatives that would help curb some of these environmental problems in the world.
Back to what it should be and begin taking on the responsibility of protecting our planetsā.
She advised Nigerians to adopt eco-friendly technologies like solar and electricity.
The head of department at the College of Environmental Science, Kaduna Polytechnic, Dr. Patrick Kigbu, urged Nigerians to be environmentally conscious and not do anything that will damage the environment.
He said, āNigerians must be proactive to curtail the issue of climate change. Letās be conscious of planting trees; plant five if you destroy one tree.ā
He advised the government to implement enabling laws to curb certain activities promoting climate change.
One of the students, Aishatu Ibrahim, urged Nigerians to stop dumping waste in the waterways.
