Women Initiative for Sustainable Environment (WISE) has mobilised students in Kaduna State to drive climate change mitigation in the country.

The founding director of WISE, Olanike Olugboji-Daramola, during a one-day awareness walk at the College of Environmental Studies, Kaduna Polytechnic, with the theme “Generation Green: Taking the Lead in Tackling Land Degradation and Drought,” urged the students and young women to engage in tree planting.

“Planting trees can be a means of livelihood for homes; we cannot survive without trees. I am urging you all to have love for the environment”.

However, Olugboji-Daramola urged the students to think differently about the environment, noting that global warming is a warning.

“It’s been a burning issue on my mind in recent times as I continue to hear eco-anxiety. A lot of young people are becoming anxious about all the bad news, the chaos across the world, environmental challenges, global warming, and other related issues around the environment.

“We decided to create awareness among young people about the need for them to take the lead, think outside the box, drive solutions, take actions, and develop initiatives that would help curb some of these environmental problems in the world.

Back to what it should be and begin taking on the responsibility of protecting our planets”.

She advised Nigerians to adopt eco-friendly technologies like solar and electricity.

The head of department at the College of Environmental Science, Kaduna Polytechnic, Dr. Patrick Kigbu, urged Nigerians to be environmentally conscious and not do anything that will damage the environment.

He said, “Nigerians must be proactive to curtail the issue of climate change. Let’s be conscious of planting trees; plant five if you destroy one tree.”
