The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded a remarkable revenue performance in 2025, collecting N7.28 trillion and surpassing its target by N697 billion, the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adeniyi, announced on Monday.

Speaking at the International Customs Day 2026 celebration in Abuja, which coincided with the launch of the Service’s Time Release Study (TRS), CG Adeniyi disclosed that the 2025 collection exceeded the N6.5 trillion target by over 10 per cent.

Compared to 2024’s N6.1 trillion, the figure represents a 19 per cent year-on-year growth of approximately N1.1 trillion.

“These gains came not from arbitrary impositions or compromising legitimate traders, but from improved compliance, better data use, digital tools, and disciplined enforcement,” Adeniyi stated, emphasising that the achievement resulted from deepening collaboration with the private sector while upholding trade facilitation commitments.

Under the theme “Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment,” the Comptroller General outlined three strategic priorities for sustaining the Service’s dual mission of protection and prosperity.

The priority areas include investing in intelligence-led, technology-driven enforcement using risk management and data analytics; institutionalising procedural reforms to reduce clearance time and increase transparency; and strengthening partnerships with government agencies, the private sector, and international bodies.

Adeniyi acknowledged the critical support of President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Trade and Investment, the World Customs Organisation, and the United Kingdom government for supporting the TRS programme. He also commended NCS officers working in challenging environments and industry partners.

The TRS report, he noted, would guide the implementation of reforms, including synchronized inspections, improved gate coordination, and enhanced system interoperability, reinforcing that security and economic prosperity are complementary objectives.
