Nigeria Must Honour Athletes Pledges – Analyst

Sports analyst Victor Adebiyi has called on the Nigerian government to honour long-standing promises of rewards to athletes, warning that repeated failures to deliver undermine trust and discourage future talent.

Adebiyi highlighted that successive administrations have frequently announced gifts of houses and financial incentives to victorious national teams, such as the Super Eagles, Super Falcons, and D’Tigress, only for these pledges to fade over time.

“The story has become painfully familiar. Heroes celebrated on television, applauded at the Presidential Villa, photographed with dignitaries, but rarely compensated as promised,” he stated.

Nigeria’s athletes, from Olympic medallists to continental champions, have brought immense pride to the nation, yet many promised rewards remain undelivered decades later. Adebiyi argued that this pattern raises serious questions about accountability and sincerity in government support for sports.

Critics contend that these delays do more than just disappoint athletes; they erode public trust and send a damaging message to young Nigerians that patriotic sacrifice will be applauded but not genuinely rewarded.

In contrast, countries such as Kenya, Rwanda, and South Korea have promptly honoured their commitments to athletes, reinforcing confidence in national institutions.

“These nations understand a fundamental truth: honouring commitments to athletes is not charity; it is nation-building,” Adebiyi asserted. “When Nigeria fulfils its pledges, the impact radiates far beyond sports, strengthening belief in meritocracy and institutional integrity.”

He warned that broken promises risk turning athletes into “ambassadors of disillusionment,” spreading narratives of government unreliability. Adebiyi urged reforms, including a National Sports Rewards Fund insulated from political transitions, quarterly public reports on outstanding pledges, and strict timelines for delivery.

“For the nation’s heroes, recognition should not end with applause and handshakes; it should be honoured with timely delivery,” he concluded. “Every promise kept becomes a brick in the foundation of a more trustworthy nation.”
