The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a significant step toward deepening technology transfer and renewal energy following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment and the Asian Economic Development Committee (AEDC).

The agreement, announced on Monday by the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Senator John Owan-Enoh, marked a major milestone in Nigeria’s drive to implement its newly approved National Industrial Policy, particularly in the area of clean mobility and sustainable manufacturing.

Enoh described the MoU as “a clear expression of our resolve to reposition Nigeria’s industrial sector and move deliberately into the implementation phase of the newly approved National Industrial Policy.”

He noted that the partnership aimed to translate policy vision into measurable outcomes, with a focus on establishing electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing facilities in Nigeria, rolling out a nationwide EV charging infrastructure, and ensuring technology transfer and capacity development for Nigerian professionals.

According to the minister, the project will be implemented in phases, beginning with EV assembly before advancing toward full in-country production.

“Technology transfer remains central to this engagement. Our objective is straightforward. Nigerians must be active participants across the electric vehicle value chain, building skills, creating value, and driving innovation, rather than remaining passive observers,” Enoh said.

He commended the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ambassador Nura Rimi, and the leadership of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) for their roles in achieving the milestone.

“This MoU represents a clear shift from policy to execution. Together, we are laying a strong foundation for sustainable manufacturing, industrial innovation, and Nigeria’s emergence as a leading electric vehicle hub on the African continent,” he added.

The partnership is expected to catalyse Nigeria’s participation in the fast-growing global EV market, creating jobs, building local expertise, and positioning the country as a regional leader in green industrialisation.
