The National Sports Commission (NSC) is gearing up to host the African Karate Championship from July 25 to 27, 2025, with a renewed commitment to enhancing the country’s sporting facilities and attracting international tournaments.

NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko made this declaration during a meeting with a delegation led by Bechir Cherif, Vice-President of the World Karate Federation (WKF), and H.E. Silas Agara, President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria.

Dikko emphasized the NSC’s dedication to upgrading Nigeria’s sports infrastructure, stating, “We are committed to hosting as many international tournaments as possible. We already have the budgetary support and clear roadmap for upgrading our facilities.”

He reiterated that enhancing these facilities is crucial for not only international events but also domestic competitions, which play a significant role in engaging youth and creating job opportunities in sports.

The Chairman stressed the directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to advance Nigeria’s sports economy, aiming for sports to contribute significantly to the nation’s GDP. “Hosting these tournaments is paramount in my engagements with global stakeholders,” he added, referencing his recent discussions at the ANOCA General Assembly in Algiers.

Dikko expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to host a remarkable championship, assuring Cherif, who had previously visited in 2003, that the country is well-prepared. “By the time you come in July, you will see even more development on the facilities,” he promised.

Silas Agara commended the NSC for its support, noting that the recent inspection by the WKF delegation has bolstered confidence in Nigeria’s capability to host the event. Cherif echoed this optimism, stating, “I am so sure that this will be a good championship. In July, Abuja will be the capital of world karate.”

As the countdown to the African Karate Championship begins, the NSC’s proactive approach signals a promising future for sports in Nigeria, with aspirations to not only host regional tournaments but also to set sights on global events like the World Karate Championship.
