Nigerian-born educator, Adeola Akinsulure, has brought international recognition to the country’s education sector after emerging as one of the Top 50 teachers globally at the recently concluded Global Teacher Prize 2026, organised by the Varkey Foundation.

The Top 50 finalists were selected from over 5,000 nominations and applications across 139 countries worldwide, underscoring the prestige and competitiveness of the award.

The Global Teacher Prize celebrates exceptional educators who have made outstanding contributions to the teaching profession and to society as a whole.

Akinsulure, a Biology teacher at the Omole Senior Grammar School, is widely recognised for her impactful work in transforming STEM education. Her contributions span mentoring girls, championing environmental sustainability, and empowering students in low-resource schools through creativity, innovation, and access to global opportunities.

In light of this remarkable achievement, many stakeholders believe that the Nigerian government, particularly the Lagos State government, should formally recognise and celebrate Akinsulure for this significant milestone, which places Nigeria firmly on the global education map.

The STEM education expert has also expressed deep appreciation to her mentors, partners, colleagues, and students who have supported and walked this journey with her.
