A UK-based Consultant Urological/Robotic Surgeon, Professor Kingsley Ekwueme, is planning to introduce a groundbreaking non-invasive treatment for enlarged prostates, a medical innovation never before performed in Africa.
This development follows his successful leadership in Nigeria’s first robotic prostate cancer surgery and marks another major step in advancing urological care in the region.
Ekwueme, who disclosed this while speaking to LEADERSHIP, said, prostate health is a major concern for men across Africa, and not every case requires surgery.
“We are preparing to unveil a revolutionary non-invasive treatment that will offer effective relief without incisions, reducing recovery time and hospital stays,” he added.
Beyond prostate cancer treatment, Ekwueme has also established expertise in kidney cancer surgeries, bladder cancer treatments, and procedures for benign prostate enlargement. His commitment to expanding treatment options ensures that Nigerian patients no longer have to travel abroad for world-class care.
Ekwueme emphasized that while technological advancements are crucial, training local medical professionals is equally important. “Bringing cutting-edge technology to Nigeria is just one part of the equation. We must also invest in training the next generation of Nigerian surgeons in robotic and minimally invasive procedures,” he said.
To achieve this, Ekwueme called on the government and healthcare institutions to establish partnerships that will facilitate widespread access to advanced surgical training. “If we can train more surgeons locally, we can expand access to these life-changing procedures and ultimately save more lives,” he added.
With a plan to unveil the non-invasive prostate treatment on the horizon and a push for more robotic surgery training, Nigeria is positioning itself as a leader in medical innovation. “This is just the beginning. We are committed to revolutionizing urological care across Africa,” Ekwueme stated.
