Nigerians and other nationals seeking to obtain varying range of United Kingdom (UK) visas to study or work, as well as residency applications and citizenship processes will henceforth pay more as the UK government has hiked the fees, from April 8, 2026.

Information regarding the new policy was published by the UK Home Office yesterday, where the increases were made clear to prospective applicants both inside and outside the UK in different categories, which included visit visas, student visas, work visas, settlement applications and naturalisation fees.

Nigerians will surely be among the highest that will be affected by these hikes as the country has historically produced some of the biggest number of applicants for UK visas with tens of thousands of Nigerians applying annually for visit, student and work visas.

According to the new visa policy short-term visit visa has been increased from £127 to £135, while the student visa has increased from £524 to £558. Prospective applicants for permanent residency will pay £3,226, up from £3,029, and those applying to naturalise as British citizens have their fee increased to £1,709, from £1,605.

However, the fee for registering a child as a British citizen was unexpectedly reduced from £1,214 to £1,000, a cut of £214. All other fees have been either increased or remained unchanged. Categories such as  the Tier 1 (Investor) visa and the High Potential Individual visa, are unchanged at £2,000 and £880 respectively according to the UK sources.
