‘Nigeria’s Democracy Under Threat’, New PDP Chair Turaki Cries Out To US President Trump

The new national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), on Tuesday, appealed to the international community, including United States President Donald Trump to intervene in what he described as an existential threat to Nigerian democracy.

Addressing journalists at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, Turaki accused unnamed elements within the federal government of orchestrating violence against the party and warned that the situation has reached a level that requires urgent global attention.

“What is at stake is not just genocide against Nigerian Christians, he (Trump) should come and save democracy in Nigeria. Democracy is under threat,” Turaki said, directly urging US President Donal Trump to act.

Turaki claimed that a serving minister of the Tinubu Government was leading armed thugs, with the “active conival support of the police,” allegedly creating mayhem at the party’s national headquarters.

“I cannot understand how a serving minister of the Republic of Nigeria will be leading armed thugs and then with the active conival support of the police to come and create mayhem here,” he said.

The PDP chairman reiterated the party’s determination to defend its offices, mandate and the nation’s democratic institutions.

“I have said it, we are willing to lay down our lives to protect our office, to protect our democracy, to protect our mandate,” Turaki declared.

He appealed for broader international solidarity, urging “all other developed nations, all advanced democracies” to step in and help preserve Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Nigerians, you are watching what is happening. International community, you are seeing the threat to Nigerian democracy. Come and save us. Come and save us,” Turaki pleaded.

The remarks came amid heightened tensions within the PDP, where rival factions have clashed over control of party national headquarters.
