The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), has issued a public advisory outlining critical access protocols for users of its self-service portal for National Identification Number (NIN) data modification.

Reacting to this, the head of the Corporate Communications Unit at NIMC, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, said the measures were designed to safeguard and protect the identity of users and ensure the secure handling of sensitive personal data during modification processes.

“Applicants for NIN data modification are advised to note that access to the self-service portal is tied exclusively to the browser and device used during initial registration,” Adegoke stated.

According to him, any attempt to access the portal from a different browser or device may result in authentication issues or access denial.

“To modify your NIN record successfully, you must log in using the same browser and device used to register the account. Switching browsers or clearing the cache could disrupt access,” he explained.

Adegoke further warned that, users who clear their browser cache risk locking themselves out of the system, as this action resets browser identifiers required for login verification. Clearing your browser cache will reset the browser and may lock your account in such cases, an unlinking process must be initiated to restore access, he added.

He, however, advised that, in a bid to tighten digital security, the commission had also placed a restriction on the number of unlock attempts permitted once an account is locked. “Once your browser and device are locked, you are allowed a maximum of five (5) unlock attempt requests. No further requests will be processed after this limit is exceeded,” the spokesperson stated. Dr. Adegoke appealed to users to adhere strictly to the laid-down procedures to avoid unnecessary disruptions and delays in processing.

“We urge all users to follow these guidelines diligently. Your cooperation is essential as we continue to improve service delivery while protecting your personal data,” he concluded.
