The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has alerted Nigerians to brace for thunderstorms, gusty winds and potential disruptions to daily activities across the country on Monday.

The agency stated this in a weather outlook released on its verified X handle on Sunday.

According to the forecast, “Hot and sunny conditions will dominate the morning, while isolated thunderstorms later may be accompanied by gusty winds and brief atmospheric disturbances,” especially in parts of the northern region, including Taraba State.

For the North-Central region, NiMet said, “A calm and warm morning may give way to thunderstorms later in the day.

“While some areas will experience rainfall, others may have strong winds without significant precipitation, early planning of outdoor activities is advised,” noting that areas such as Niger State, Kwara State, Benue State, Kogi State, Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory would likely be affected.

The agency added that the southern region would experience heightened storm activity, stating, “Thunderstorm activity will intensify later in the day — expect wet conditions, lightning, and possible disruptions to outdoor activities,” across states including Lagos State, Ogun State, Oyo State, Enugu State, Anambra State, Rivers State and Delta State.

NiMet also issued safety advisories, warning, “Strong winds may precede thunderstorms, secure loose objects,” and urging residents to “drive cautiously during rainfall due to reduced visibility and slippery roads.”

It further cautioned the public to “avoid flood-prone areas during periods of heavy rainfall” and noted that “lightning strikes are possible; seek shelter during storms.”

The agency added that “airlines should obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet for safe operations.”
