The Nigeria National League (NNL) Matchday 16 delivered a dramatic set of results, with ABS FC securing their NNL status thanks to a crucial 1-0 victory over Sokoto United. The hard-fought win in Sokoto was vital for ABS, as they went into the match knowing that three points were imperative to avoid relegation to the Nationwide League One (NLO). Conversely, Mighty Jets were relegated to the NLO.

In other Conference C action, Kada City recorded a 3-1 win against Doma United. Doma United had already secured their promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) prior to the game, having topped Group C with 26 points, making Kada City’s victory a mere formality for the newly promoted side.

Akwa United further solidified their leading position in Conference B with a commanding 3-1 triumph over Ekiti United at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. This emphatic win marks Akwa United’s second consecutive victory, keeping their promotion aspirations firmly alive and bolstering their chances of returning to the NPFL. The hosts dominated proceedings, scoring three and conceding just once, while Ekiti United, despite a spirited effort, couldn’t convert their opportunities.

Sporting Lagos maintained pressure on leaders Akwa United with a resounding 5-1 thrashing of 10-man Stormers FC in Abeokuta, a result that keeps them firmly in contention for NPFL promotion.

Meanwhile, in Conference A, Inter Lagos held onto their top spot with a resilient 0-0 draw against Sunshine Stars in Akure. This hard-earned point keeps Inter Lagos in prime position to secure one of the coveted promotion berths to the NPFL. Sunshine Stars, despite creating chances, were unable to breach the solid Inter Lagos defence.

NNL Matchday 16 also saw other thrilling encounters as teams battled for supremacy across their respective conferences. With the league approaching its decisive stages, the promotion race is intensifying. The battle for the top two spots in each conference promises more nail-biting action for fans of Nigerian football in the remaining fixtures.

In Conference A, Inter Lagos’s consistent performances have given them a comfortable lead, but Sunshine Stars and other contenders are poised to capitalise on any potential slip-ups. The NNL title and promotion spots are very much up for grabs, promising a thrilling climax to the season.
