No Nigerian Airline Makes 2026 Global Top 10 In Africa

Nigeria’s domestic airlines have been shut out of Africa’s top 10 carriers in the 2026 Skytrax World Airline Awards, underscoring the challenges confronting the country’s aviation industry amid rising operating costs, weak passenger purchasing power and mounting pressure on airline capacity.

None of Nigeria’s nine scheduled domestic airlines featured in the continental ranking, which was led by Ethiopian Airlines, according to the 2026 Skytrax awards.

The absence comes as local carriers grapple with high aviation fuel prices, foreign exchange constraints, expensive aircraft maintenance, multiple industry charges and subdued demand, factors that aviation experts say are limiting their ability to sustain and expand operations.

Beyond the rankings, industry stakeholders warn that the combination of high fares and weak passenger demand is creating a difficult cycle for Nigerian airlines, with implications for flight availability, business travel, national connectivity and the wider economy.

The nine Nigerian scheduled airlines are Arik Air, Air Peace, Overland Airways, Max Air, Aero Contractors, Ibom Air, United Nigeria Airlines, Green Africa Airways and ValueJet.

Ethiopian Airlines emerged as Africa’s highest-ranked carrier, followed by EgyptAir, Air Mauritius, Royal Air Maroc, RwandAir, South African Airways, Kenya Airways, FlySafair, Fastjet and LIFT.

Skytrax said its rankings were based on a global customer satisfaction survey conducted by the UK-based aviation consultancy, with airlines assessed across various aspects of the passenger experience.

Skytrax chief executive officer, Edward Plaisted, said airline passenger service quality continued to improve despite the difficult operating environment confronting the industry.

While the rankings focus on passenger experience, the absence of Nigerian airlines provides a fresh reference point for examining the structural constraints facing the domestic aviation market, where operators are struggling to balance affordability, service delivery and financial sustainability.
