North Central Group Faults Attack On Akume Over Minimum Wage

A group known as North Central Media Forum (NCMF) has called for support for the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, to enable him to discharge his duties without distraction from any direction

Akume had declared his inability to pay his four drivers a monthly salary of N100,000 each at a recent meeting with the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Abuja, citing his financial constraints.

His statement coincided with the agitation of Nigerian workers for a new minimum wage of N250,000.

The statement was widely criticised, particularly from those who oppose him politically.

However, in a statement in Abuja, the forum said the criticism is unfair and a “gross exaggeration of an honest man’s words”.

“Senator Akume has always been forthright and transparent about his financial situation. He lives on his pension as a former governor of Benue State and his salary as the secretary to the government of the federation.

“Unlike many others in positions of power, Akume is not involved in any business ventures, and he has never engaged in corrupt practices to amass personal wealth. During his tenure as governor, senator, minister and now the SGF, he has always dedicated himself wholeheartedly to serving his people, using his wisdom and resources. He might represent them selflessly and generously.”

The group’s president, Abubakar Yakubu, added that “it is essential to highlight that Senator Akume’s modest lifestyle is a testament to his integrity and honesty as he has consistently chosen to prioritise the needs of the people over personal gain.

He recalled how Akume’s tenure as governor, senator, and minister was marked by numerous instances of personal sacrifice, during which he extended his resources to solve the problems of his constituents.

The group maintained that many of those who criticise the SGF today for his financial limitations have benefited from his generosity and dedication to public service at one time or another.

“We are shocked and dismayed by the hypocrisy of those who now question his financial transparency. These critics conveniently forget the countless times they sought Akume’s help for their problems and were met with his support,” the forum said.

The forum also urged Nigerians to recognise the former minority leader for who he truly is as an honest and dedicated public servant.
