The National Population Commission (NPC) chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, has called for increased funding to support the commission’s operations and the upcoming population and housing census.
He made this appeal while presenting the NPC’s 2024 Budget Performance and defending the proposed 2025 budget before the House of Representatives Committee on National Identity and Population at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
Joined by federal commissioners, the director-general, and senior directors, Hon. Kwarra highlighted the commission’s critical funding needs and emphasised the importance of the census in shaping national planning and development.
He disclosed that a separate budget for the census would be submitted to the National Assembly following presidential approval.
In his remarks, the chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Okunjimi Odimayo, stressed the need for the prudent use of allocated funds and assured the NPC of the lawmakers’ support.
He reaffirmed the House’s commitment to assisting the commission in achieving its mandate, particularly the successful conduct of the census.
The meeting underscored the collaborative efforts required between the NPC and lawmakers to ensure the success of Nigeria’s census initiative and the efficient management of the commission’s operations.
