The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season is set for one of its most dramatic conclusions in recent memory, with league leaders Enugu Rangers and second-placed Rivers United separated by just a single point heading into the final round of fixtures on Sunday(Today).
With the title, continental qualification, and relegation survival all on the line, the NPFL has prepared for every eventuality, including deploying two trophies to both potential championship venues to ensure a seamless coronation.
After 37 intensely contested matchdays, Rangers International sit at the summit with 65 points, while Rivers United are hot on their heels with 64. The Flying Antelopes, who boast the league’s best defensive record having conceded just 25 goals all season, require a victory in Lagos to secure a record-equalling ninth NPFL crown. Their opponent, Ikorodu City the season’s surprise package remains unbeaten at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena and is still chasing a CAF Confederation Cup berth.
For Rivers United, the task is straightforward: defeat Katsina United at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium and hope that Rangers slip up in Lagos. The Pride of Rivers have turned their home ground into a fortress, remaining unbeaten there since October 2025.
In a move to protect the integrity of the competition, the NPFL has enforced simultaneous 4:00 p.m. kick-offs across all Matchday 38 fixtures, ensuring no team gains an unfair advantage.
At the other end of the table, the fight for survival is equally intense. Former champions Bayelsa United and Wikki Tourists have already been relegated following Matchday 37 defeats. However, several traditional powerhouses remain in grave danger. Defending champions Remo Stars, nine-time champions Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Warri Wolves, and Plateau United are all battling to avoid joining them in the drop zone, with only a few points separating safety from disaster.
Beyond the title, the race for CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup spots adds another layer of tension. Shooting Stars are pushing hard for a top-three finish, while Ikorodu City’s continental hopes hang in the balance ahead of their clash with Rangers.
Adding further drama, the NPFL Golden Boot race remains too close to call. Rangers’ Godwin Obaje currently leads the scoring chart with 14 goals, but faces intense pressure from Remo Stars captain Victor Mbaoma, Ikorodu City sensation Joseph Arumala, and Wikki Tourists striker Jonathan Mairiga, all of whom are within striking distance.
As the league prepares to crown its champion, one thing is certain: today’s final day promises to deliver unmissable drama, raw emotion, and a fitting climax to a truly unforgettable NPFL season.
