Davidson Owumi, the Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has reached out to the Chairmen and General Managers of the league’s 20 participating clubs with a heartfelt letter emphasising the importance of protecting the league’s reputation as a commercial asset.

In the memo entitled “Protecting and Building the NPFL Brand,” the former top scorer assured club officials of the NPFL’s commitment to fairness, excellence, and neutrality as it navigates the crucial parts of the season. “Our dedication to excellence and fairness remains unwavering as we progress,” he stated.

Owumi commended club administrators for their cooperation, which facilitated a smooth operation during the first half of the season. He urged them to enhance their adherence to league rules and encouraged them to act as the league’s chief marketing officers by countering any negative public commentary that could undermine the NPFL’s market viability.

“It is vital for all of us to recognise our responsibility in safeguarding and enhancing the NPFL as an asset for the benefit of all stakeholders,” he reminded the club leaders, highlighting their role as the first ambassadors of the league. “Without the 20 participating clubs, there can be no league; your importance in these matters cannot be overstated.”

Owumi expressed concern over recent negative comments made by some club leaders, which could jeopardise the progress achieved by the Otunba Gbenga Elegbeleye-led board over the past four seasons. He urged those feeling aggrieved by on-field or off-field decisions to use the proper communication channels for redress.

“Let us remember that disparaging the league is akin to undermining your own foundation,” he cautioned. The memo concluded with a warning that actions bringing the league into disrepute could have consequences, reiterating that while the NPFL Board does not wish to impose sanctions, all parties are subject to the league’s rules at all times.
