The National Sports Commission (NSC) has applauded the nation’s para powerlifting team for their exceptional performance at the just concluded World Para Powerlifting Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.
Team Nigeria demonstrated remarkable strength and national pride, finishing second overall in the medal standings with an impressive haul of 20 medals: 8 gold, 7 silver, and 5 bronze. China secured the top position with a total of 21 medals, comprising 13 gold, 4 silver, and 4 bronze.
In a congratulatory message, NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade commended the athletes for their resilience and for elevating the Nigerian flag on the global stage. He stated, “Our para athletes have once again proven that Nigeria is a powerhouse in para powerlifting. Their dedication and discipline embody the true spirit of our nation. The NSC remains committed to supporting and empowering our athletes to achieve even greater heights.”
Mr. Sunday Odebode, President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria (PCN), also praised the NSC’s leadership for its unwavering support of para sports. He highlighted the significant contributions of NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, describing their impact as transformative. “This is a breath of fresh air for para sports in Nigeria. The athletes are motivated, the system is improving, and there’s renewed confidence among our teams. We are immensely grateful for the exceptional leadership and support from NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade,” said Odebode.
Looking ahead, Nigeria’s para athletes are preparing for their next challenge at the West African Para Soccer Tournament, which is set to take place in Lagos. Preparations are underway under the continuous guidance and support of the NSC.
