The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Honourable Bukola Olopade, has emphasised the importance of the World Relays Championship in Botswana, calling on Team Nigeria athletes to compete with pride and a winning spirit.
Speaking in Gaborone after the team’s final warm-up session, Mr Olopade addressed athletes and officials, highlighting the historical significance of athletics for Nigeria.
“Athletics has consistently been one of our most productive sports for empowerment and capacity building. Personally, this is my fourth World Relays, having attended long before becoming NSC DG.”
He underscored the high expectations surrounding relay events in Nigeria: “The relays are a significant event, as Nigeria always anticipates them at major multi-sport competitions. This championship is also a crucial qualifier for the World Athletics Championships.”
Mr Olopade appealed directly to the athletes:
> “I urge you to perform for yourselves, for the country, for your states, and above all, for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. The President’s message is always clear: ‘Do well and return to a grateful nation.'”
He concluded by conveying well wishes from the NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, as the competition commences.
