The National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced a comprehensive three-part strategy aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s sporting framework in 2026, focusing on domestic competition development, global talent engagement, and enhanced international representation.
Central to the initiative is the establishment of a Main Organising Committee for the maiden National Intermediate Games, scheduled to take place in Lagos. The competition is designed to bridge the developmental gap between grassroots athletes emerging from the National Youth Games and elite-level performers. Director General, Bukola Olopade, will serve as Chairman of the committee, underscoring the Commission’s commitment to building a more structured athlete progression pathway.
In a parallel move, the Commission has set up a Diaspora Talent Discovery Committee, chaired by Tunde Adelakun. The committee comprises experienced professionals drawn from football, athletics, media, and sports administration, with a mandate to identify and integrate Nigerian talents based abroad into the national sporting system.
Further reinforcing its international ambitions, the NSC has also unveiled Team Nigeria Ambassadors ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The ambassadors include a mix of former administrators, elite athletes, and key stakeholders tasked with supporting athlete preparation and promoting Nigeria’s presence on the global stage.
The Commission said the combined initiatives reflect a deliberate and strategic effort to deepen the domestic talent pipeline, expand Nigeria’s global talent reach, and enhance the country’s competitiveness at major international sporting events.
With these measures, the NSC signals a renewed commitment to long-term planning and sustainable growth within Nigeria’s sports sector.
