Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has announced the disbursement of cash awards to the athletes and officials of Team Delta in recognition of their exceptional performance at the 21st National Sports Festival (NSF), held in Asaba, Delta State.

Team Delta made history by securing an unprecedented 576 medals, including 280 gold, 167 silver, and 129 bronze—an outstanding feat that highlights their dominance in Nigerian sports.

As part of the cash awards for the NSF, athletes who achieved between 7 to 8 individual gold medals will receive between N7 million to N8 million, respectively.

Hon. Onoriode Oborevwori, Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, commented on the governor’s approval, stating that Team Delta has once again confirmed its supremacy in Nigerian sports by successfully defending its title and claiming a record-breaking eighth championship win across the festival’s ten editions.

He praised the governor’s gesture as a clear indication of his commitment to sports development. “This approval reflects His Excellency’s dedication to recognizing and rewarding excellence. Our athletes and officials have given their best, and this reward will undoubtedly inspire them to aim even higher,” he remarked.

In a similar vein, the Director-General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Festus Ohwojero, expressed his appreciation for the decision, noting its importance as the team prepares for the upcoming Gateway Games in Ogun 2024.

“This is a well-deserved reward for our athletes and officials. It will serve as a morale booster as we gear up for the next national games, ensuring Delta State remains a dominant force in both national and international sports,” he stated.

Governor Oborevwori has consistently prioritized the welfare of athletes. Just two months before the 8th edition of the National Youth Games, he approved cash awards for the 7th edition, a timely gesture that significantly motivated athletes, contributing to Delta State’s first-place finish at the 8th National Youth Games.

In December 2024, the governor also ensured that cash awards for the 8th edition were disbursed during the festive season, allowing athletes and officials to celebrate Christmas and New Year joyfully, he added.
