National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) director-general, Brig‑Gen Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has marked one year in office and promised to improve the welfare of corps members and the operational efficiency of the scheme.

At a ceremony in Abuja yesterday to present his one-year scorecard, Nafiu highlighted his administration’s three-pronged focus on transparent leadership, robust corps welfare and job creation initiatives.

According to him, the policy aim was to strengthen the NYSC Scheme to meet the evolving needs of contemporary Nigerian society and ensure its future relevance.

“It is with humility and honour that I present my one-year report as the 23rd director-general of the National Youth Service Corps.

“Over the past year, we have worked collectively to reposition the scheme for greater impact, guided by discipline, excellence and service to the nation,” he said.

On staff welfare and development, he said the NYSC had taken tangible steps to improve conditions for employees and corps members.

“We secured a compressed natural gas (CNG) bus to enhance transportation for staff and corps members. We conducted the 2025 promotion exercise, with 696 senior and 139 junior staff promoted, and 173 staff approved for conversion to new cadres and salary grades. In addition, disengagement allowances were promptly paid to retired staff.

“We have approved upward reviews of kit, daily feeding and transport allowances, effective 2027. These steps are part of our commitment to ensuring that corps members’ welfare remains a priority,” he stated.

Nafiu further said the scheme recruited 850 staff to strengthen operational efficiency and continued strategic engagements with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) and state governments, to ensure the scheme meets its objectives.
