Obama Presidential Centre Pays Tribute To The Chef They Lost

The Obama Presidential Centre threw open its doors on 18 June 2026, a sprawling hub built for the community that raised Barack and Michelle Obama.

Visitors can explore a full-scale Oval Office replica or browse Michelle’s gowns from state functions past. Yet it’s the campus restaurant, Tafari’s Kitchen, drawing the most attention.

The name honours Tafari Campbell, who rose from White House sous chef to the Obamas’ trusted personal chef. Food lovers may recognise him from a 2012 clip showing him brewing beer with honey straight from Michelle’s beehives.

Three years ago, tragedy struck. Campbell drowned in a paddleboarding accident near the family’s Martha’s Vineyard home; the Obamas were away at the time.

“A warm, fun-loving, and selfless soul, with award-winning culinary talent,” reads his tribute on the OPC website, adding that he “used his passion for food to spread joy and create community.”

Chef Cliff Rome built the menu around that spirit. Standouts include Tafari’s Famous Ribs, paired with potato salad or coleslaw, alongside Obama Family Chilli and Mrs Robinson’s Red Rice, a dish honouring Michelle’s late mother, Marian, who served hers with sautéed shrimp and bacon.
