Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the2023 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has donated the sum of N75 million to a missionary hospital, Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, Anambra State.

The former Anambra State governor had for several years been crisscrossing different parts of the country and some African countries donating towards strengthening the critical sectors, especially, health, education, environment, etc.

For instance, late last year he donated the sum of N50 million to the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, Enugu State for the improvement of the healthcare delivery services in the missionary hospital.

While presenting two separate Fidelity Bank cheques of $50,000 and N25 million to the management of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, yesterday, Obi explained that the $50,000 was donated by one of his Lagos-based friends, Professor Philip Ozuah, who supported him, while the N25 million came directly from him. Obi stated that the two donations summed up to N75million.

In an interview with newsmen after making the donation, Obi said his choice of channeling financial support for improving critical areas of the society was predicated on his experience when he was governor of Anambra State.

He said that it was his partnership with Missionary institutions that accounted for the outstanding achievements his administration recorded, especially in the education and health sectors.

Obi said, “I have always talked to people to support me in the development of the critical areas like health, education and to take care of the poor people.

“I have always supported institutions that are well managed, and, when I was governor, the missions helped my government a lot in the achievements we recorded, and, they have been very wonderful.”

In their separate speeches, the superior-general, Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Mother of Christ, Mother Maureen Akabogu and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, Rev. Sister Maria Nkiruka Okafor thanked Obi and his friend, Prof. Philip Ozuah for coming to the aid of the hospital.

Mother Akabogu for instance, said that before the news that Obi was coming to make donation to them came to her, she had been passing sleepless nights because of the challenges of delivering healthcare services and other acts of charity facing them in the hospital.

“This gesture given to us today, Mr. Peter Obi and his friend, Prof. Philip Ozuah will greatly help us to continue to do the good work we are doing in this hospital, giving treatment to people with different sicknesses, both the rich and the poor; caring for the poor, etc.
