The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has released the second part of his proposed roadmap for Nigeria, outlining policy proposals on education and healthcare.

The roadmap was contained in a statement signed by Idris Zekeri Jnr, Spokesman of the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), on Thursday.Obi said the document builds on the framework he unveiled on July 1, which outlined his vision for reforms in education, healthcare, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), character education and civic values.

He said the latest phase of the roadmap focuses on education and healthcare, describing them as key sectors for national development.

According to Obi, his proposed reforms would seek to align education with Nigeria’s development priorities, drawing lessons from countries such as Singapore and China.

He said the proposal includes strengthening collaboration among the three tiers of government to improve the management of primary education, with greater community and parental involvement and curricula tailored to local economic needs.

Obi also proposed support for state governments to expand Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and improve secondary education through grants and incentives.

He further said universities would be encouraged to specialise in teaching and research areas where they have comparative advantages to improve competitiveness and produce graduates with skills relevant to the labour market.
The former Anambra State governor also cited economist Angus Deaton’s work on the relationship between health, education and economic development while arguing for increased investment in the two sectors.
Obi said additional parts of the roadmap would be released in the coming weeks and months.
