Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State has handed over the construction of a multi-billion naira international airport to contractors.
The project, located in Zariagi on the outskirts of Lokoja, is expected to serve as a major gateway for investment, trade and industrial expansion in the state.
Represented at the ceremony by the commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Victor Atuluku, the governor described the airport initiative as a people-oriented and economically transformative project designed to reposition Kogi as a strategic hub for business and commerce.
At the project site, Atuluku conveyed the governor’s assurances that the airport would unlock the state’s vast economic potential, attract both local and international investors, and create employment opportunities across various sectors.
He noted that the project is not only about aviation but also a deliberate effort to drive economic diversification and long-term growth.
According to him, the facility, when completed, will enhance the socio-economic profile of the state and open up new opportunities for artisans, small businesses, and large-scale enterprises.
Governor Ododo reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the project, pledging the deployment of adequate human and material resources to meet set deadlines.
He expressed confidence that the establishment of a state-owned airport would attract multinational companies and high-value investments, while connecting Kogi to key economic centers within and beyond Nigeria.
The project has been awarded to leading construction firms, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and Gamji Construction Company, with a mandate to deliver a world-class facility in line with international standards.
The governor charged the contractors to adhere strictly to project specifications and timelines, emphasizing quality, professionalism, and diligence in execution.
He also called on the host community and residents of the state to support the project to ensure its smooth and peaceful completion.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to security, Ododo assured investors and stakeholders of adequate protection of lives and property, noting that a safe environment remains essential for sustainable development.
The handover ceremony underscores the government’s determination to implement impactful infrastructure projects aimed at boosting economic prosperity and improving the living standards of the people of Kogi State.
