In the aftermath of the off-cycle governorship elections held on November 11, 2023, the National Peace Committee (NPC) has commended Nigerians, especially the residents of Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi states.

In the statement signed by the chairman of the NPC, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, expressed gratitude to all key stakeholders who played crucial roles in ensuring the elections’ fairness and credibility.

He acknowledged the efforts of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, traditional rulers, political party leaders, non-governmental organisations, civil society groups, and the media.

“We commend the voters in the states for their dedication to civic duties despite obstacles and threats,” stated General Abubakar.

He urged the people to remain resilient and learn from the election experiences to address shortcomings in the electoral process.

Highlighting concerns, General Abubakar addressed glitches observed during the elections, including the persistence of vote-buying, intimidation, and voter apathy.

He emphasised the importance of active participation in cleaning up the electoral process, stating, “A democratic culture will only grow if we participate in cleaning up the process of our elections because, in the end, we are the victims.”

The chairman of the National Peace Committee urged winners to fulfill their promises while encouraging unsuccessful candidates to trust in the judiciary and seek redress through legal means.

Emphasising the critical role of the judiciary in societal development, he reminded citizens that, despite political differences, unity is essential for the progress of the nation.

Abubakar also extended his wishes for the continued unity and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, stating, “Irrespective of our diversity and political differences, we are better as one, united and indissoluble country.”
