In a symbolic ceremony held at Government House Makurdi yesterday, the Benue State governor, Hyacinth Iormem Alia, represented by the deputy governor, Barrister Sam Ode, received the Torch of Unity for the 22nd edition of the National Sports Festival scheduled for Ogun State from May 16 to May 30, 2025.
He received the symbolic torch from delegation of the National Sports Commission as a formal invitation for the state to participate in the festival.
Presenting the Unity Torch to the Governor, the leader of the delegation, Ikana Mbora, stated that the presentation marks the formal invitation for the State to join the event, which signifies the countdown to the National Sports Festival scheduled to take place in Ogun State next month.
Upon receiving the Unity Torch, Barrister Ode commended the delegation for their visit, describing it as a symbol of unity that will bring together sports enthusiasts across the country and further solidify national cohesion amidst our diverse backgrounds.
The Deputy Governor characterised Governor Hyacinth Alia as a sports enthusiast who has introduced significant innovations in the sporting sector, particularly in terms of infrastructural development.
“I want to emphasise that no previous governors of Benue State have supported the development of sports as Governor Alia has by investing substantial resources into the sector, especially football, aimed at taking youths off the streets to reduce crime,” he remarked.
“We urge investors to come and invest in the sporting activities of the State, as sports is an industry. We are looking at it not only as a recreational or social activity but as a business. We aim to diversify into other sports such as volleyball, handball, and table tennis, among others, to unearth talents that will represent the State nationally and globally.”
The Deputy Governor also praised the Commissioner for Sports, Youth Development and Creativity, Terkimbi Ikyange, and the management of Lobi Stars Football Club, led by Chairman Dr Philip Nongo, for their resilience in the face of the challenges posed by playing outside their home state.
“I commend the tenacity of Lobi Stars Chairman Dr Nongo for his efforts thus far. Playing outside your home state is not easy; fans can easily turn against you at any moment. However, we believe that the McCarthy Stadium will soon be ready for use.”
Barrister Ode also acknowledged the leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in the state for their commitment toward promoting sports activities and the development of Governor Alia’s administration through their reporting. He assured the union of the government’s continued support, adding that the government would make a special commitment to ensure full SWAN representation at Ogun 2025.
“This Torch of Unity undoubtedly symbolises our shared aspirations and collective identity, and it is with great honour that I receive it today on behalf of the Governor and the sports-loving people of the State.”
Earlier, the team leader from the National Sports Commission, Ikana Mbora, commended the Deputy Governor for the warm reception accorded to the team, stating that the presentation of the Unity Torch is an invitation for participation and a symbol of unity.
According to her, “The National Sports Festival, tagged ‘Gateway Games’, promises to be a rewarding experience, featuring a wide range of sporting activities, including football, handball, volleyball, basketball, and many others. With thousands of athletes from various states participating, the festival is expected to showcase the best of Nigerian sports talent.”
She explained that the Torch of Unity movement represents the spirit of unity, peace, and sporting excellence that defines the National Sports Festival. As the torch begins its journey across the country, it embodies the anticipation and excitement leading up to the festival.
