The Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Youths Movement has welcomed the ruling of the Abuja High Court granting approval for the implementation of Nigeria’s new tax regime from January 1, describing the judgement as a landmark decision that strengthens the country’s push for sustainable economic transformation.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Youths Movement and signed by the group’s leadership, the youths said the court’s decision reaffirmed “the independence of the judiciary and its commitment to the supremacy of the rule of law,” adding that the ruling had cleared lingering uncertainties capable of undermining key economic reforms.
According to the group, the judgement represents a major boost to Nigeria’s fiscal reform agenda, stressing that the new tax regime remains “a vital pillar in Nigeria’s journey toward fiscal discipline, improved revenue generation, and reduced dependence on borrowing.”
The youths maintained that “no nation can attain true economic stability without an efficient, transparent, and equitable tax system.”
“We Ohanaeze Youths commend the judiciary for standing firm on the side of national interest,” the statement read.
“This ruling has consolidated the ongoing efforts aimed at repositioning the Nigerian economy for growth, shared prosperity, and long-term stability.”
While acknowledging that economic reforms often come with short-term difficulties, the group argued that the long-term gains of the new tax framework far outweigh any temporary discomforts. It listed “improved infrastructure, better public services, and enhanced opportunities for businesses” as some of the expected benefits of the policy.
The youths further noted that the court’s ruling had effectively “laid the foundation for a seamless takeoff of the exercise on January 1,” urging Nigerians to show understanding and patience as the policy is rolled out. According to the statement, the success of the new tax regime “requires more patience from Nigerians, especially at the early stages of implementation.”
Calling for broad public cooperation, the group appealed particularly to young people and entrepreneurs to work with relevant authorities to ensure a smooth implementation process. It emphasised that “constructive engagement remains the best path to addressing concerns that may arise from implementation.”
At the same time, the Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Youths charged government agencies responsible for enforcing the tax regime to uphold transparency, fairness, and accountability, warning that public trust would be decisive in achieving the desired economic outcomes.
“The judgement of the court is a clear signal that national development must rise above sectional interests,” the statement added. “We therefore encourage all stakeholders to support the implementation process in the collective interest of Nigeria’s economic renewal.”
The group also reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising Ndi Igbo youths toward compliance, civic responsibility, and constructive participation in policies aimed at driving national economic transformation.
