Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa has called on the police to investigate the alleged killing of a young man by a police officer in Asaba, the state capital yesterday.

He decried the shooting of the deceased, Mr Onyeka Ibe, on Ugbolu- Illah Road by a member of the stop -and-search police team over an alleged N400 bribe.

In a statement by the chief press secretary , Mr Olisa Ifeajika, the governor sued for calm, and appealed to residents not to take laws into their hands but should allow the police to conduct an in depth probe into the  circumstances that led to the sad incident.

He said the police officer, an inspector who allegedly fired the shot that killed Ibe, was promptly arrested and is currently being detained at the command headquarters in Asaba.

He advised citizens to go about their normal businesses and remain law-abiding, assuring that the law will take its course on the incident after a thorough investigation by the police.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a youth over N400 bribe by a trigger-happy cop.

The police gave the name of the deceased as Mr Onyeka Ibe, who was shot dead on Wednesday at about 9:30a.m by one inspector of police, Inspector Ebri Ubi, during a stop-and-search duty along Ugbolu-Illah Road, Oshimili North.

According to the statement, CP Ali, “On receipt of the sad news, immediately ordered the arrest and detention of the errant police officer and directed his transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Asaba where he has further ordered for a thorough and speedy investigation.”

The CP, according to Edafe, “Noted that for the Force, being a disciplined organszation, will not condone such cruel action by any member, assuring that the offending officer will be subjected to internal disciplinary measures, including criminal prosecution.”
