Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the killing of a youth at the main gate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), describing the attack as barbaric and unacceptable.

The victim was reportedly shot dead by suspected gunmen in broad daylight on Sunday at the Ugbowo campus of the institution, throwing the university community into panic.

Reacting to the incident, Governor Okpebholo, in a statement, expressed sadness over the killing and extended condolences to the family, friends and associates of the deceased.

The governor described the incident as “a brazen and cold-blooded act” that constitutes a threat to public safety and an assault on the values of his administration.

According to him, “the murder of a young person in broad daylight is completely unacceptable. It is an affront to human dignity and a direct threat to the peace and security of our people.”

He assured residents that security agencies had already commenced investigations into the incident, stressing that those behind the crime would soon be apprehended and brought to justice.

“The perpetrators may run, but they cannot hide forever. This case will not be swept under the rug. Justice will be served,” the governor stated.

Okpebholo reiterated his administration’s resolve to tackle cult-related violence and criminality across the state, noting that deliberate efforts were already being intensified to curb the menace.

“Edo State will not be a sanctuary for criminals. Those who carry arms and terrorise innocent citizens will face the full weight of the law,” he added.
