Organisers of the 11th edition of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race have announced that registration for Nigerian participants will close on Saturday, May 23, ahead of the highly anticipated event scheduled for May 30 in Okpekpe, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The race, widely regarded as one of Africa’s premier road running events, is a World Athletics Gold Label competition and continues to attract elite athletes, fitness enthusiasts and corporate partners from within and outside Nigeria.

Race Director Zack Amodu urged intending participants to complete their registration promptly through the official race website, warning that late entries would not be entertained due to logistical and accreditation requirements.

According to Amodu, bib collection and accreditation for runners will take place on Friday, May 29, at the Uyi Ground Hotel, Auchi, with activities scheduled around the swimming pool.

He noted that the deadline is necessary to ensure proper coordination and smooth organisation of the internationally recognised competition. “The Okpekpe race has become a platform for showcasing our culture, hospitality, and commitment to excellence,” Amodu said.

Since its inception in 2013, the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race has continued to make history in athletics in Nigeria and across West Africa. It remains the first road race in Nigeria to have its route measured by a World Athletics-certified course measurer and the first road running event in West Africa to receive a World Athletics Label.

The event, organised in line with World Athletics regulations and powered by Pamodzi Sports Marketing, has grown steadily in stature over the years.

Beyond the competition itself, organisers say the race has become an important driver of social and economic development. It promotes healthy living, community engagement and tourism while creating economic opportunities for businesses and residents in Edo State.

Amodu also highlighted the race’s commercial value, describing it as an attractive platform for corporate sponsorship and brand visibility.

“The Okpekpe race is not just about competition; it is about connecting brands with people, culture, and excellence,” he said.

He added that sponsors benefit from international media exposure, direct engagement with thousands of athletes and spectators, and opportunities to showcase products and services within Edo State’s rich cultural environment.

According to the organisers, the race also offers brands a unique opportunity to align with values such as fitness, wellness and social cohesion, further strengthening its reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting events.
