‎Tension gripped residents of Ogbese community on Tuesday morning as youths blocked the busy Akure/Owo highway in protest over the alleged killing of a farmer by gunmen.
‎
‎The demonstrators barricaded the road bringing vehicular movement to a halt and leaving commuters stranded for hours. They demanded urgent government action to protect lives and property in the area.
‎
‎Ogbese, a boundary community in the Akure North Local Government Area of the state has in recent times witnessed rising attacks on farmers, heightening fear among residents who depend on farming for their livelihoods.
‎
‎According to locals, the recent victim, identified as Ben Daniels, was attacked on Monday night while riding to his farm camp. Community members said the killing has intensified anxiety, with many fearing for their safety.
‎
‎The protesters insisted that the barricade was intended to draw attention to what they described as persistent threats from armed attackers. They stressed their right to live peacefully and pursue lawful activities without fear of murder or kidnapping.
‎
‎Reacting to the incident, the Ondo State Police Command’s public relations officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, confirmed receiving a report of a violent attack on March 2, 2026, at about 9:00 p.m. along Agunla Farm Road.
‎
‎He said, “The incident was reported to the Police at approximately 9:30 p.m. by a concerned citizen.
‎
‎”Preliminary investigations reveal that the deceased, Ben Daniels (male), and one James Unekwu (male) were riding a motorcycle to a camp when they were allegedly attacked by unknown gunmen. James Unekwu reportedly escaped from the assailants, while the victim was murdered and his body dumped along the roadside.
‎
‎”Police operatives promptly mobilised to the scene, evacuated the corpse, and deposited it at the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. The escaped victim is currently in police protective custody as tensions rise over a possible conspiracy, while investigations continue.
‎
‎”The Command urges residents to remain calm and refrain from blocking highways or engaging in activities that may disrupt public peace, as such actions infringe on the rights of other road users. The grievances of concerned persons are noted, and due process will be followed to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
‎
‎”The commissioner of police assures the good people of Ondo State that the Command remains resolute in combating crime and criminality. Residents are encouraged to continue their lawful activities without fear.”
‎
‎Amid the crisis, the Ondo State government has directed security agencies to crackdown on the insecurities happening in the state.
‎
‎The state commissioner for information and orientation, Hon. Idowu Ajanaku said, “The government has consequently directed all security agencies in the state to intensify surveillance and immediately clamp down on individuals or groups involved in these nefarious activities.
‎
‎”Security operatives have been mandated to ensure that those found culpable are apprehended, thoroughly investigated, and brought to justice in accordance with the law.
‎
‎”Residents are also advised not to remain silent in the face of suspicious activities. If you see something, say something. The protection of lives and property remains the foremost priority of the Ondo State Government, and no individual or group will be allowed to undermine the peace, security, and stability of our dear state.“
