Fintech company OPay has said it is working with the Department of State Services, DSS, and the Nigeria Police Force to investigate false information circulating on social media claiming that the company is shutting down its operations in Nigeria.
OPay’s Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Rokosu, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press conference organised by the company and aired on its YouTube channel.
Rokosu said the DSS and the police were among the law enforcement agencies investigating the circulation of the information, adding that OPay had provided evidence to help identify those responsible.
He said the company was taking action against those who created and circulated the information and would pursue the matter through the law.
According to him, anyone who deliberately engages in similar conduct should expect decisive legal action and the full consequences provided by law.
Also speaking, OPay’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Technical Officer, Dotun Adekunle, assured customers that the fintech company remains operational and has no plan to shut down its Nigerian operations.
Adekunle described the viral message as false, stressing that it did not originate from OPay.
He noted that the message claimed OPay would shut down its operations on September first, but the company remained fully operational as of Wednesday, September second.
Adekunle urged customers not to make financial decisions based on unverified messages circulated on social media and messaging platforms.
He warned that fraudulent messages could be designed to look official by using copied logos, convincing documents and other features capable of misleading members of the public.
The clarification follows a viral notice circulated on Sunday claiming that OPay would suspend its operations from September first, 2026.
The message also advised customers to withdraw their funds to avoid losing access to their accounts.
OPay had earlier dismissed the notice as false and urged customers to rely only on its official communication channels for information concerning its operations.
