Orette: Tax Burden, Healthcare Costs Deepening Nigerians’ Hardship

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for Delta South Senatorial District, Dr Austin Orette, has raised concerns over the rising cost of living, increasing financial burdens on households and deficiencies in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Orette, who spoke on Sunday in Warri while addressing party supporters, said efforts to tackle extreme poverty must focus on improving the income and productivity of Nigerians rather than imposing additional financial burdens on households already struggling with high food, transportation, energy, school and medical costs.

He said government policies, particularly taxation, should take into account the capacity of citizens and businesses to pay, arguing that economic reforms should be accompanied by measures to expand economic activity, create jobs and improve public services.

According to him, government should be concerned not only with how much revenue it can generate but also with what Nigerians can realistically afford.

Orette also criticised what he described as excessive reliance on taxation and other charges as instruments of economic management, saying a productive economy should generate more taxpayers through increased economic activity.

He identified healthcare financing as one area where the economic difficulties facing Nigerians were particularly evident, warning that medical expenses could push vulnerable families further into poverty.

The family medicine expert said his legislative agenda, if elected, would focus on healthcare, accountability, economic opportunity, human development and representation.

He said the 2027 election should provide voters in Delta South an opportunity to assess the quality of representation they want in the National Assembly, rather than focusing solely on the individuals seeking political office.

Orette called for issue-based campaigns ahead of the election, saying political debates should focus on policies and their effects on citizens.

He said he would seek to use the Senate to raise issues affecting Delta South, particularly healthcare, energy, infrastructure and economic opportunities.

Orette also called for greater consideration of the social consequences of economic reforms, particularly their impact on vulnerable Nigerians.

He said Nigerians deserved policies that protect their dignity, a healthcare system that does not push families into poverty and leadership that considers the consequences of major government decisions.

The ADC candidate said his interest in the senatorial contest was driven by the desire to represent, question, legislate and advocate for the people of Delta South.
