The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Nigerians to show greater respect and commitment for the nation’s symbols of unity and sovereignty as the country marks the 2025 National Ordinance Day.

In recent years, the NOA has intensified campaigns to instil respect for the National Flag, Anthem, Pledge, Coat of Arms, and other emblems of sovereignty, emphasising that these symbols are central to Nigeria’s unity and national identity.

In August 2025, the agency launched a two-week nationwide enlightenment campaign -beginning on August 20 – focusing on five thematic areas, including the Nigerian Identity Project and the National Symbols Campaign.

In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja, the director-general of the NOA, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, said the National Flag, Coat of Arms, National Anthem, Pledge, Constitution, and other official emblems were far more than ceremonial artefacts. Rather, they represent the country’s identity, dignity and shared values.

“Respect for our national symbols is respect for Nigeria itself. Each time we hoist the flag correctly, recite the pledge sincerely, or sing the anthem with pride, we affirm our loyalty and commitment to the ideals of our nation,” he said.

National Ordinance Day, observed annually on September 16, commemorates the formal handover of Nigeria’s national symbols at independence.

Issa-Onilu urged Nigerians to use the day for reflection and renewed dedication to national unity, discipline and service.

He further called on schools, communities, government institutions and civil society organisations to integrate respect for national symbols into daily life, noting that such efforts would help deepen national consciousness and promote social cohesion.

“These symbols are not just for display at official events — they should live in our hearts, our institutions and our actions every day,” he added.
