The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) has officially launched the National Volunteer Database and the National Policy on Inclusive Volunteerism to boost civic engagement.
The event, “Launching the National Volunteer Database in Nigeria and the Blueprint of the National Policy on Inclusive Volunteerism,” took place recently in Abuja and aims to enhance civic engagement and national development.
In a statement, the head of communications for Natview Technology, Olubunmi Olorunpomi, said the launch signifies the government’s commitment to mobilising Nigerians for volunteerism.
According to him, the initiative is a collaboration with Natview Technology, which has developed a digital platform to support the country’s sustainable development goals.
He said, “The National Volunteer Database is designed to provide Nigerians with streamlined access to volunteer opportunities that contribute to socio-economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social solidarity. It features user-friendly registration and matching capabilities, allowing citizens to specify their skills and interests for meaningful volunteer roles.
“The accompanying National Policy on Inclusive Volunteerism, approved by the Federal Executive Council in December 2020, sets a structured framework for volunteer engagement across various sectors, including health, education, and environmental initiatives.
“Managed by the Nigerian National Volunteer Service (NNVS), the policy aims to empower individuals and communities and foster collaboration for national progress.
“Key features of the National Volunteer Database include community project listings for NGOs and agencies to post volunteer opportunities, built-in communication tools for interaction between volunteers and project organisers, and impact assessment mechanisms to evaluate project outcomes.
“The government anticipates that this initiative will not only strengthen community bonds across diverse regions but also encourage civic responsibility among citizens.
Meanwhile, Mr Nuradeen Maidoki, CEO of Natview Technology, highlighted the importance of the database for Nigerian youth.
“Many young Nigerians want to volunteer but don’t know where to start. We are excited about this web platform, as it will offer a comprehensive database of volunteer opportunities for them,” he stated.
