Former Edo State governor and senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole, has endorsed the proposed death penalty for kidnappers and bandits by the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo, describing the measure as necessary to tackle rising insecurity in the state.

Oshiomhole stated this on while addressing supporters during the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign for the Edo North Senatorial District local government elections in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued by Governor Okpebholo’s media aide, Patrick Ebojele, Oshiomhole said criminal elements should have no place in Edo State and backed the governor’s proposal to punish kidnappers and bandits by firing squad.

“I stand here to completely endorse the declaration by the governor of Edo State that we are in a federation where every state has the right to enact laws on punishment when it comes to state offences,” he said.

The senator also reiterated his support for the creation of state police, noting that it would complement the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force in tackling insecurity.

In his remarks, Governor Okpebholo said his administration remained committed to improving residents’ welfare through massive infrastructural development, including roads, schools and markets.

The governor also praised President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly the removal of fuel subsidy, saying the policy had increased funds available to states for development projects.

Okpebholo urged party supporters to mobilise ahead of the forthcoming local government elections and work towards delivering 2.5 million votes for President Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, called on APC candidates to prioritise grassroots development if elected, describing the local government election as a crucial step towards 2027.

Edo APC chairman, Jarrett Tenebe, urged party candidates to focus on quality service delivery and work closely with the state government to extend development to the grassroots.
