The footballing world turns its attention to the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium this Sunday as Victor Osimhen has been officially cleared to feature in the fiercely contested Intercontinental Derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe.
The Nigerian marksman’s availability had been shrouded in doubt following Galatasaray’s recent Turkish Cup exit at the hands of Gençlerbirliği, where Osimhen was forced to play wearing a specialised protective arm brace.
The inclusion of the masked striker has sparked significant controversy in the build-up. Fenerbahçe lodged a formal complaint with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), sensationally claiming that the protective gear posed a physical risk to opposing players during aerial duels and physical exchanges.
However, the TFF’s disciplinary and medical committees summarily dismissed the protest. It was ruled that the brace was medically essential, professionally manufactured, and had already met the stringent safety standards required by international football authorities.
With the two giants having played out a cagey 1-1 draw in their previous encounter this term, the stakes could not be higher. Galatasaray currently sit at the summit of the table with a slender four-point lead over their eternal rivals.
A victory for the Lions would essentially put one hand on the league trophy, while a win for Fenerbahçe would blow the title race wide open.
