Nigerian international Victor Osimhen, Galatasaray’s star striker, is facing a potential spell on the sidelines after sustaining a fractured arm during the club’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg clash against Liverpool at Anfield.
The incident occurred during Galatasaray’s 4-0 defeat on Wednesday, which saw them exit the competition 4-1 on aggregate.
A club statement issued on Thursday confirmed the severity of the injury following hospital examinations. “The decision regarding surgery will be made in the coming days after further examinations,” the Turkish club announced, without specifying an anticipated return date for their prolific forward.
The injury took place early in the match when Osimhen was involved in an aerial challenge with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté. Konaté landed awkwardly on Osimhen’s arm, causing immediate distress for the Nigerian.
Despite initial suggestions from some Liverpool players that Osimhen might be feigning or exaggerating the injury, he continued to play the remainder of the first half with a bandaged forearm before being substituted at half-time.
Subsequent medical assessments revealed a fracture in Osimhen’s right forearm, which has since been placed in a medical cast. The club’s medical team is now deliberating the necessity of surgical intervention.
Osimhen had been a pivotal figure for Galatasaray in their Champions League campaign, bagging seven goals and providing three assists in ten appearances, alongside earning four man-of-the-match accolades.
Adding to Galatasaray’s injury woes, Osimhen’s replacement in the match, Noa Lang, also suffered a “serious cut to his right thumb” and is scheduled to undergo surgery in Liverpool before returning to Turkey.
Liverpool’s dominant victory at Anfield has propelled them into the quarter-finals, where they are set to face current holders Paris Saint-Germain.
