Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to Canada, Ambassador Abba Zanna Kawu, has disclosed that more than 300 Nigerian medical doctors, lawyers and other professionals are currently practising their professions across Canada, reflecting the growing contributions of Nigerians to the country’s workforce.
The envoy spoke at the just concluded popular annual Flavour of Nigeria Festivals held at the Gage park in Brampton said about 124,000 Nigerians currently reside in Canada, while an additional 82,100 Nigerians hold valid study visas.
He noted that Nigerians have continued to distinguish themselves in diverse professional fields, including medicine, law and accounting, thereby strengthening the country’s image abroad.
Speaking on the state of relations between both countries, Ambassador Kawu described the Nigeria-Canada bilateral relationship as “excellent,” saying diplomatic ties established shortly after Nigeria’s independence in 1962 have continued to grow from strength to strength. According to him, Nigeria is now Canada’s second-largest trading partner in Africa.
He said the Nigerian community in Canada includes over 300 medical doctors and specialists, a vibrant branch of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), and more than 300 Nigerian lawyers practising across the country. “We have professionals in virtually every field of endeavour making meaningful contributions to Canada’s development,” the ambassador stated.
On the proposed direct air link between both countries, Ambassador Kawu said the Air Services Agreement would significantly enhance the movement of people and goods. He explained that the arrangement is expected to provide up to 14 flights between Toronto and Lagos, while creating opportunities for increased cargo movement, particularly the export of Nigerian agricultural produce to Canada.
The seasoned diplomat said the Nigerian Mission is looking forward to deepening economic cooperation and substantially increasing the volume of trade between both countries.
He said expanding commercial exchanges remains a priority as both governments seek to unlock new investment and business opportunities.
Ambassador Kawu also highlighted the significance of the annual Flavour of Nigeria Festival, describing it as a key platform for promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.
He noted that while the Benin culture was showcased during last year’s edition, this year’s festival celebrates the Arewa culture through its cuisine, fashion and traditions as part of Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy.
He urged Nigerians at home to remain optimistic, stressing that Nigerians in Canada are excelling in their various professions. “The relationship between our two countries is fantastic, and we are looking forward to greater trade volume and stronger people-to-people relations between Nigeria and Canada,” Ambassador Kawu said.
