No fewer than 30,000 professional teachers have so far indicated interest to participate fully in 2024 Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) annual conference.
The acting registrar/chief executive, Stella Maria Nwokeocho, who disclosed this during a press conference, said the 4th Annual Online Conference of Registered Teachers in Nigeria scheduled to hold on October 16-17, 2024.
He said the conference is for both teachers at primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, public and private.
According to Stella, the first ever UNESCO 2023 Global Report on Teachers, which focused on teacher shortages had confirmed the threats that teacher shortage and poor professional skills pose to the education system.
She added that Nigeria as the “Giant of Africa” has a huge share of the teacher shortage and need for continuous updating of the professional skills and competences of teachers along the lines identified by these evolving global concerns and recommendations.
She further said that this important goal of repositioning teachers in Nigeria to meet international standards call for collaboration with the media, sister agencies and international development partners, and other critical stakeholders.
“TRCN has attained this global mark and is proud to do every thing it takes to sustain the standards, part of which is through maintaining a competent teaching force that will be recognized anywhere in the world.”
She therefore, calls for urgent action to address serious issues in the teaching profession that pertain to pre-service teacher education and continuous professional development.
