Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has registered as a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chief Victor Umeh and his Anambra North Senatorial District counterpart, Dr. Tony Nwoye, also registered as members of the ADC.

Obi and Umeh registered at their respective wards in Agulu, Aguluzigbo in Anaocha LGA while Nwoye did his own registration at his Nsugbe ward in Anambra East LGA.

Speaking during the membership registration at Hollywood Events Centre, Awka, yesterday.

Obi alleged that the APC was perfecting plans to “snatch and run” with the results of the general elections, saying it was the same thing the party did in the last presidential election.

“INEC is setting a trap for political parties by issuing guidelines for selection of candidates, and also frustrating freedom of association for political parties.

“INEC is a referee in an election, and a referee in a match doesn’t dictate to the teams on how they should select their players. INEC should restrict itself to conducting a free, fair and transparent election. The 2027 election will be Nigerians against bad leadership”, Obi warned.

He said Nigeria as it is today is among the countries in the world nobody would wish to live in.

He added that virtually all the critical sectors of the country that drive development and promote human wellbeing including the power, health, education, security are in comatose, and the sad situation is because of bad leadership.

Urging ADC stakeholders to embark on aggressive membership mobilisation, Obi urged members of the party to commit themselves to a free, fair and transparent election in 2027.

The registration was witnessed by ADC major stakeholders in the state, including Senator Ben Obi, national organising secretary of the party, Barr. Chinedu Idigo, the member representing Ogbaru federal constituency, Hon Afam Ogene, his counterparts for Anambra East/ Anambra West, Peter Anekwe; Awka-South/Awka-North, Prof Lilian Orogbu; the candidate of the party in the just concluded Anambra governorship election, John Nwosu and his deputy, Dr. Ndubuisi Nwobu and hundreds of other members and loyalists of the party.

Before the commencement of the registration exercise, a total of 48,900 membership cards of the party were distributed to the party’s leaders in the 21 LGAs of the state for distribution to each of the 326 wards for membership registration at the wards.

In their respective speeches, Ben Obi, Umeh and Orogbu appealed for aggressive mobilisation of members for the party in the state.

They pledged unflinching support for the presidential aspiration of Obi in 2027.

They urged all members of the party and everyone in the state to support Obi.

Umeh stated that Anambra has about 2.8 million registered voters, and urged the entire voters to queue behind Obi in 2027.

The ADC’s national organising secretary, Barr. Chinedu Idigo, assured that more membership cards would be brought from the national headquarters of the party.

Obi accused INEC of dictating to political parties on how to select their candidates, and also accused the All Progressives Congress-controlled federal government of perfecting plans to rig the general elections.
