In a major boost for educational access in Kogi State, renowned philanthropist, Asiwaju Prince Olatunji Olusoji, the Bashorun Akinjagunla of Ogidi Kingdom, has awarded full three-year scholarships to 100 indigent students of the Kogi State College of Education (KSCOE), Ankpa.

The scholarship, worth over ₦15 million, was unveiled as part of a private intervention aimed at removing financial barriers and giving economically disadvantaged students a chance at higher education. Each beneficiary will have their tuition fully covered for the entire duration of their academic programme.

The initiative was lauded as a landmark effort to promote inclusive education and is aligned with the education reform agenda of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State, who has repeatedly emphasised the importance of empowering the next generation of educators.

Provost of KSCOE Ankpa, Dr. Femi Fashagba, described the gesture as a “beacon of hope” and commended Asiwaju Olusoji for his swift and substantial financial commitment.

“This intervention goes beyond mere charity — it is an investment in the future of Kogi State. We are grateful for this show of support, which reflects the growing synergy between public institutions and private citizens,” Dr. Fashagba said.

He added that the scholarship scheme builds on ongoing efforts by the college to attract support for quality teacher education and ensure that no student is left behind due to financial limitations.

Asiwaju Olusoji, a respected figure from the Kogi West zone of the state, has long been recognised for his community-focused initiatives. His latest intervention has earned him renewed admiration across the state, especially from students and parents in Ankpa.

“Education is the great equalizer,” he said during the scholarship presentation. “By empowering these young minds, we are not only lifting families but also preparing future leaders who will teach and transform our society.”

The beneficiaries, most of whom come from rural and low-income backgrounds, expressed joy and gratitude at the opportunity to continue their studies without the burden of tuition fees. Many pledged to give their best academically and to give back to their communities after graduation.

Observers said the scholarship programme was also a signal to other well-meaning Nigerians to play active roles in transforming education through strategic philanthropy and community engagement.

With further collaborations expected between stakeholders like Governor Ododo and former Governor Yahaya Bello, the initiative marked what many hope will be the beginning of a new era in grassroots educational development in Kogi State.
