Nigerian rap heavyweight Phyno has set social media abuzz following the release of his latest freestyle, “Na Afa Nna,” which features playful references to singer Spyro and Reno Omokri, the ambassador-designate to Mexico.

The freestyle, which many fans have described as “straight fire,” has been widely praised, with listeners saying it has only heightened anticipation for Phyno’s forthcoming album.

On the track, the rapper references Spyro’s hit song “Who’s Your Guy?” with the line: “I look him face jụọ ya ‘Who’s your guy?’ ka Spyro.”

He also mentions Reno Omokri in another lyric, “Abụrọm onye mgbu ka Reno,” a line that immediately sparked conversations across X (formerly Twitter), with users debating its meaning and waiting to see whether Reno would respond.

The ambassador-designate to Mexico eventually addressed the mention on his social media page, claiming he had never heard of Phyno before the song was brought to his attention.

“I must confess that I did not know who the fellow was before now, until I looked up the song after seeing your comment,” Reno wrote.

Rather than taking offence, he described the mention as flattering.

“Well, I find it quite flattering to be immortalised in an Afrobeats song by the artist Phyno. It is a great honour. How many people do you know who have been memorialised in a song? It is a rarity.”

Reno added that whether the lyrics were complimentary or not was of little importance to him.

“Whether or not Mr Azubuike insults me on the track is immaterial. The important thing is that the song commemorates me.”

His response has generated even more reactions online, with many social media users amused by the exchange. In contrast, others questioned his claim of not knowing one of Nigeria’s most celebrated indigenous rappers.

Meanwhile, fans continue to stream “Na Afa Nna,” with many describing the freestyle as another reminder of Phyno’s lyrical prowess and eagerly awaiting what he has in store for his next album.
