Former Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, along with other prominent Nigerian political figures, is presently attending the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, United States, as a special guest of the National Democratic Institute (NDI), a Washington, DC-based organisation dedicated to promoting democratic values worldwide.

Among the notable attendees are the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and former Senate President, Ken Nnamani.

According to NDI, Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, was also invited, although it remains unclear if he accepted the invitation.

The National Democratic Institute, a respected non-profit and non-partisan organisation, has been instrumental in supporting and strengthening democratic institutions globally since its establishment in 1983. The organisation provides technical assistance to political parties, civic groups, and electoral processes, with a strong emphasis on promoting citizen participation, transparency, and accountability in governance.

Analysts view Osinbajo’s participation in the convention as a reflection of his growing international political profile and engagement since leaving office in May 2023. His presence, along with other distinguished Nigerian leaders, has highlighted the importance of fostering global democratic values and underscores the significant role African leaders play in shaping the future of democracy both on the continent and worldwide.

Their involvement in the convention also signify a commitment to engaging with diverse political processes and learning from global experiences to enhance governance and democracy in Nigeria.

The Democratic National Convention, a key event in the U.S. political calendar, serves as a platform where the Democratic Party discusses key policies and strategies, alongside the formal nomination of the party’s presidential candidate. This year, current U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to be officially nominated.

The convention also offers an opportunity for global leaders and stakeholders to observe and participate in discussions that could influence global political trends. By attending, Osinbajo and the other Nigerian leaders are poised to engage with global democratic practices, exchange ideas with international counterparts, and bring valuable insights back to Nigeria.
